Contemporary Front Extension, Wooden Cladding, Glazing

This extensive extension and remodelling project near Chilworth comprises a contemporary wooden cladding two-storey extension and other changes to provide a dramatic transformation for the house.

The proposal consists of a two-storey extension, porch extension and internal re-planning. The proposed design has been developed around the views of the countryside at the front of the house. This is where the majority of the proposed extension and key changes to the property occurred.

The majority of the two storey extension is utilising the same footprint as the existing building. The open-plan layout at ground floor has been arranged and extended to encourage a family environment and improve the circulation between the various rooms. The first floor has been arranged and extended to provide a separate master suite with a more appropriate plan. The proposed gable extension was inspired by the gable roof of the exiting house. A new centralised circulation space has also been added to simplify the original confusing layout of the house.

Timber cladding was chosen to complete the building’s bold form and its rural setting. Carefully positioned glazing provides carefully crafted vistas of the beautiful surrounding countryside. The cladding will also revitalise key parts of the exiting building fabric. A design has been created which is much better suited to the clients’ lifestyles and we are excited to help achieve the client’s vision for the property.

Chilworth Transformation

Light House Studio have designed a contemporary ground floor extension and internal replanning project in Berkshire. The project comprises an open-plan kitchen, living and dining space to provide an enlarged and much better connected space. It will maximise the connection between the main house and the existing annexe. The proposed extension will provide panoramic views of an extensive garden and maximise light and indoor / outdoor connections. Key features include a curved glazed unit, sliding doors, a feature fire, stand-alone breakfast bar and enlarged flat roof lights. The curved glazing has been utilised to create a dramatic focal point and extensive garden views.  Externally, render has been chosen to create a modern and fresh aesthetic and link with the existing house.

The Coach House

Two-storey extension to period home

Light House Studio have undertaken a two-storey side extension, replacement single storey rear extension and internal re-planning to an existing property in Hove. Situated on a tight urban site, a poorly constructed porch and detached garage was demolished to allow modernisation and reconfiguration of the property. 

Set back from the original property the design took its influence from the proportions and materials of the existing site and context. The project includes suitable internal reconfigurations of the property but also respects the building's heritage. The features of the existing building influenced the design of the building but the intension is that the extension will be built to 21st century standards and allow suitable internal changes. 

Details such as a bee brick and swift box are important ecological features to be incorporated. Externally, the two-storey extension has a subservient appearance and all proposed exterior materials match the existing elevations. The proposed windows match the proportions of the existing windows.

Hove project

Light House Studio have undertaken a contemporary gable rear extension to a detached property in Chandler's Ford. Replacing a poorly insulated conservatory, this bungalow transformation includes an open-plan kitchen, living and dining space replacing an out-of-date conservatory. Key features include: the vaulted ceilings, roof windows, sliding doors to maximise the light and space into the property and create a dramatic sense of space in this new-build area.

The extension provides extensive views of the garden and more light into the main living space of the property. The internal changes provide much better utilisation of the space for modern family life. A sympathetic material palette of red brick and interlocking concrete roof tiles was chosen to complement and match the existing house.

Rear Gable Extension - Chandler's Ford

Open-plan living & kitchen space, Glazing, Vaulted ceilings

Light House Studio have designed a contemporary gable rear extension to a detached property in Chandler’s Ford.  Replacing a poorly insulated conservatory, this bungalow transformation project includes a gable rear extension, porch extension and internal re-planning.  The rear of the bungalow will be transformed to provide a contemporary feel with key features including vaulted ceilings, high-level windows, sliding doors and patent glazing to maximise the light and space into the property.  The proposal will create an enlarged kitchen and living space providing garden view and strong indoor / outdoor connections.  A utility has also been added to provide an importance support space in the house.  The internal changes provide a better utilisation of the space.  The existing porch will also be updated to match the design and aesthetics of the gable rear extension.  Render was chosen to provide a suitable finish to give a clean, modern aesthetics.  

Apollo House

The owners of this 1980s semi-detached house near the New Forest approached Light House Studio to design a contemporary ground floor extension to provide additional living space. An open-plan space has been created with the modern design providing increased natural light and enlarged garden views.  Bi-folding doors will provide strong indoor / outdoor connections and maximise light into the property with the additional of a flat roof light. The protruding brick parapet walls frame the extension and the aluminium plinth provides a contemporary addition to the house. A larger open-plan kitchen, dining and living space has been achieved also including a feature wall with in-built fire. Externally, brick is selected to contextually link with the existing house with the larger parapet walls framing the render walls and glazed areas.  It has been really enjoyable working on this contemporary project and having the opportunity to transform our clients’ home.  Starting on site in January 2021, it will be great to see the design brought to reality.

Tennyson House

Open plan living space, Sliding doors, vaulted ceiling, contemporary

Light House Studio have designed a contemporary gable rear extension to a 1930 semi-detached property.  The rear of the property will be transformed by a contemporary gable rear extension to create an open-plan kitchen, living and dining space.  Key features include vaulted ceilings, high-level windows, sliding doors and a wood burner.  The proposal will provide an enlarged kitchen and dining space with framed garden views, indoor / outdoor connections and increased light into the property.  The aluminium trim and high-level windows provide focus on the clearly defined form and extensive framed views.  The internal changes provide a better utilisation of the space.  A sympathetic material palette of brick and interlocking roof tiles was chosen to complement the existing house but allow focus on the contemporary form.

Hamilton House

Open-plan living & dining area, contemporary

The project comprises a ground floor rear extension, first floor side extension, garage conversion and internal re-planning to a 1980s detached house in Sutton Coldfield.  A out-of-date poorly constructed conservatory has been replaced with an modern extension to house the open-plan dining doom.  This includes a roof lantern and two-sets of glazing to provide garden views,  Reconfiguration of the existing kitchen / living space create an open-plan kitchen and living space that seamlessly links with the dining room extension.  The first floor side extension built on top of the existing garage created an enlarged master bedroom, master en-suite and additional bedroom.  The new-build elements utilise the same materials as the existing house to create an sympathetic and appropriate match.  A good match for for the red-facing brick and roof tiles has been achieved.  It is great to see our clients enjoying their transformed home.    

Tamar House

This re-modelling and internal refurbishment project was undertaken in collaboration with Jennifer Carlin Architect. It comprised a major re-plan of a key areas of the ground floor. This has created a much better utilisation of space, an improved layout and better connections between the main living and kitchen spaces.  The removal of the bay window and interior walls have completely transformed the interior to create an open-plan living space which works much better. Enlarged openings provide strong indoor / outdoor connections and lovely framed views of the garden. An aluminium finish for the enlarged glazing was chosen to complement the existing brick of the house. The mainly interior changes have maximised the potential of the house by adding light, amenity values and garden views.

Ground Floor Renovation & Internal Reconfiguration

Light House Studio have designed a contemporary garden annexe in Stubbington, Hampshire.  The project comprises a home office and support space for our client.  The contemporary design will create a modern space to work from home.  This garden office includes an open-plan living / kitchen space, an office area and a shower.  The use of wooden cladding creates a natural and contemporary aesthetic and aluminium cladding overhang provides a defined finish. Bi-folding doors and windows provide a good amount of natural light and strong indoor / outdoor connections with the garden.  It is proposed to use SIPs panels to utilise a modular method of construction on site.

Light House Studio have designed a contemporary gable rear extension to a semi-detached property.  Replacing an out-of-date conservatory and separate utility to create an open-plan and modern design for the increased kitchen and living space.  

The key part of this project - the gable rear extension will transform the rear of the property.  It creates an open-plan living space, garden views and large amount of additional light.  Bi-folding doors and a high level window will maximise natural light and provide framed views of the established garden.  Red-facing brick and clay tiles were chosen as the key materials to complement the existing house. 

Sedgemere House

This project encompassed an extension and refurbishment to extend and updated a 1980s detached house.  A single-storey rear extension was designed to replace an out-of-date conservatory to create an open-plan design for the increased kitchen and living space.  The proposal will transform the ground floor to create a light, airy and open environment. It comprises a new dining area and family area to bring views of the extensive garden and additional light into the property.  It provides a suitable connection between the existing house and extensive garden. Bi-folding doors and roof lanterns will maximise natural light in this area and provide framed views of the garden.  The internal changes provide much better utilisation of the space for modern family life.  Buff facing brick was chosen as the key material to complement the existing house.
