Light House Studio was commissioned to transform a property in Hove through a two-storey side extension, a replacement single-storey rear extension and internal re-planning. Situated on a tight urban site, the project involved demolishing an outdated porch and detached garage to enable a more cohesive redesign. Set back from the original property, a carefully considered extension draws on the proportions and materials of the existing house, blending seamlessly to create a harmonious design.
Internally, the layout has been rationalised to maximise space and functionality. On the ground floor, an open-plan kitchen and living area, a dedicated office and a compact WC and utility spaces have been created. On the first floor, two spacious bedrooms, a family bathroom and an ensuite have been created. An external courtyard space has been created to relax in, while calming and curated interiors reflects its coastal setting.
Details such as a bee brick and swift box are important ecological features to be incorporated. Externally, the two-storey extension has a subservient appearance, and all proposed exterior materials match the existing elevations. The result is a cohesive, refined design that complements its coastal setting while enhancing the property’s functionality and aesthetics.
