Light House Studio were appointed to undertake a substantial remodelling of Walkford House, a detached Edwardian property near Christchurch. While the home’s historic charm – including elegant sash windows, high ceilings and period detailing – was undeniable, previous additions including a poorly insulated conservatory had left the house with disconnected and inefficient spaces, that no longer met the demands of modern family life.
The extensive refurbishment began with the removal of internal walls and the creation of a ground-floor rear and side extension. This reconfiguration opened up the space, allowing for a larger, open-plan kitchen and dining area that maximizes natural light and offers uninterrupted views of the garden.
A contemporary orangery-style extension was also added, creating a relaxed and inviting living space that seamlessly connects the indoors with the outdoors. A lean-to side extension allowed for a larger kitchen space with vaulted ceilings and roof windows.
White-painted brickwork and vertical brick detailing were used to blend the new with the original structure, preserving the home’s period elegance while introducing fresh architectural elements. The result is a refined and harmonious home that celebrates both its Edwardian heritage and its contemporary updates.
The design not only respects the property’s rich history but also elevates it, creating a home that is both timeless and contemporary.
