Set within a picturesque village near Winchester, Bridge Cottage is a detached residence set in mature gardens, surrounded by open countryside and located within a conservation area. While the existing house served the client’s needs, the desire for greater flexibility led to the design of a carefully conceived extension – transforming the original garage into a refined living annexe with additional storage, all designed to support the main house.
The design draws inspiration from the house, where the gable roofs of the main house inspired the form of the gable extension and dormers. The proposed materials have taken influence from the existing building and are sympathetic in character. White painted brick is a principal material and is used to create a relationship with the existing building.
The use of white finish wooden cladding is to provide a natural material for an ancillary building and is the same as the existing garage on the first floor. The materials unify the new structure with the original dwelling, ensuring a harmonious presence within the site. The proposed design in particular the glazing at the front and the new dormer window offers extensive views of the surrounding open countryside.
This bespoke addition is rooted in its site and crafted to enhance the everyday experience of home.
