Situated in a picturesque West Sussex village, Sandy Ridge is a charming 19th-century semi-detached cottage full of character and set in a sought-after rural setting. Previously extended in the 1970s and later fitted with a poorly insulated conservatory, the property suffered from disconnected spaces, inefficient circulation and a lack of connection to its established garden.
Our objective was to transform the internal layout, enhance spatial flow, introduce more natural light and better connections to the garden – all while respecting the cottage’s historic charm. Through a detailed design process exploring several layout options, we developed a solution that reconfigured the circulation, increased natural light, achieved an open plan feel and repositioned the main living spaces to better connect with the garden.
Key interventions included the creation of a light-filled open-plan kitchen / living space with enhanced garden access and views. The front entrance was reconfigured to offer a more intuitive and welcoming arrival experience. The result is a light and airy interior that blends modern living with traditional character.
At it’s heart, a new country-style kitchen and dining space brings a sense of warmth and character, serving as a central gathering space that opens directly onto the garden. Working with the constrains of the existing footprint, drainage constrains and a clearly defined budget, the project has achieved a timeless and elegant transformation through strategic design choice and careful material considerations. The result is a calm, cohesive home that is deeply rooted to its surroundings - honouring the past while embracing the needs of contemporary living.
