Tucked away in the countryside near Romsey, West Lodge is a charming 18th-century cottage with later additions, set within a mature garden and full of period charm. While rich in history and beautifully situated, the property’s existing layout particularly on the ground floor – felt disconnected and not suited to the needs of the clients’ current lifestyle with disjointed living spaces that lack a cohesive flow.
Our approach began with concept design exploration, working closely with the homeowners to unlock the hidden potential of their property. Through a series of collaborative design studies, we helped them visualise how suitable interventions could dramatically enhance how they live in and experience their home. The proposal includes a sunroom extension, enlarged kitchen, boot room, and pantry, reworking the ground floor to improve flow and functionality.
Options ranged from traditionally inspired solutions to more contemporary forms, including the idea of a mezzanine-level sunroom that introduces vertical interest and a sense of retreat. Each option was designed to harmonise with the existing building while reimagining the home as a sanctuary for modern family life.
At the heart of the project is the goal to create tranquil, light-filled spaces that feel connected—to each other, to the garden, and to the rhythms of daily life. Through thoughtful design, West Lodge is being transformed into a place of calm, comfort, and lasting character—rooted in its rural setting yet ready for the future. The transformation not only improves spatial flow and functionality but also embraces the garden setting—framing views, drawing in natural light, and rooting the home more deeply within its rural context.
